This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure last September. Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately 5%. The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through. Shareholder Structure The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company. An official representative stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and each shareholder are dedicated to continued achievements of the brand in Formula One." Financial Growth This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022. This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally. This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630 million (£458m) at the box office. It is Pitt's most successful movie and the most successful sports film ever released. Current Performance Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix left in the current championship. Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen. The team won a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
