We have witnessed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of compassion into a symbol of hate who endorses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

So let me first describe the Christ that I grew up with, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.

During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Finest Within Us

So I have been heartened to observe the determined opposition to Trump develop during the previous year.
