"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their extra sister." There's just a single issue: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Several celebrated supporters have publicly coveted the honor. The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy hopefuls. Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their videos repeatedly feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too." "How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to make music." "And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the next part of the family." The group's live shows have propelled them ascend to headliner status of line-ups throughout the world. Grammy Nod The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit. They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy. "I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?" The weight of the honor resonates with the band. "We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us." Personal Turmoil and Humour The project was born from a phase of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on. The themes follow departures and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming. "That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'." The trio topped a notable new artist list in 2013, and have later secured multiple successful albums. Refinement of Sound That developed toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before. For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound. "Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says. "'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound." I Quit hones Haim's trademark blend, merging organic instrumentation with rhythmic beats and catchy pop tunes. Stories and Shared Humor The band's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales. Someone ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight. "Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible." The band recently wrapped up a major tour, but mention they plan to tour again in the future. An Assured Legacy It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the rock pantheon. They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following. However Haim will consistently be their top focus. "My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
